✧ On the authority of A’ishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, that when the Messenger of God ﷺ came to Madinah, his daughter Zaynab left Makkah with Kinanah or the son of Kinanah. They went out after her, and Habbar b. al-Aswad caught up with her and kept thrusting her camel with his spear until he threw her down, and she miscarried what was in her womb and bled. She was carried away, and the Banu Hashim and the Banu Umayyah disputed over her. The Banu Umayyah said, “We have more right to her,” because she was married to their son Abu al-As. She was with Hind bt. Utbah b. Rabiah, and Hind kept saying to her, “This is because of your father.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said to Zayd b. Harithah, “Will you not go and bring Zaynab?” He said, “Yes, O Messenger of God.” He said, “Take my ring and give it to her.” So Zayd set out, and he kept acting gently until he met a shepherd. He said, “For whom are you herding?” He said, “For Abu al-As.” He said, “Whose sheep are these?” He said, “For Zaynab bt. Muhammad.” He walked with him for a while, then said, “Would you like me to give you something that you will give to her and not mention it to anyone?” He said, “Yes.” So he gave him the ring, and the shepherd went off and brought his sheep in and gave her the ring. She recognized it and said, “Who gave you this?” He said, “A man.” She said, “Where did you leave him?” He said, “At such-and-such a place.” She remained silent until nightfall, then she went out to him. When she came to him, he said to her, “Mount in front of me on my camel.” She said, “No, but you mount in front of me.” So he mounted and she mounted behind him until she arrived. The Messenger of God ﷺ used to say, “She is the best of my daughters; she suffered because of me.” This reached Ali b. Husayn, so he went to Urwah and said, “What is this hadith that has reached me from you, that you narrate it diminishing the right of Fatimah?” Urwah said, “By God, I would not like to have everything between the east and the west if I were to diminish a right that belongs to Fatimah. But after this, I will never narrate it again.”
