حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِرْقٍ الْحِمْصِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُصَفَّى ثنا بَقِيَّةُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ثنا بَحِيرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ مَعْدَانَ قَالَ قَالَ

أَبُو عَطِيَّةَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ جَلَسَ فَحَدَّثَ أَنَّ رَجُلًا تُوُفِّيَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «هَلْ رَآهُ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمْ عَلَى عَمِلٍ مِنْ أَعْمَالِ الْخَيْرِ» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ نَعَمْ حَرَسْتُ مَعَهُ لَيْلَةً فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَمَنْ مَعَهُ فَلَمَّا أُدْخِلَ الْقَبْرَ حَثَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِيَدِهِ مِنَ التُّرَابِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنَّ أَصْحَابَكَ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّكَ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ» ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِعُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ «لَا تَسَلْ عَنْ أَعْمَالِ النَّاسِ وَلَكِنْ سَلْ عَنِ الْفِطْرَةِ»

✧ Abu ʿAtiyyah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down and mentioned that a man had died. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Did any of you see him engaged in any good deed?” A man said: “Yes, I stood guard with him one night in the cause of Allah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and those with him stood up, and when he was placed in the grave, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ scooped up earth with his hand and threw it, then said: “Your companions think that you are among the people of the Fire, but I testify that you are among the people of Paradise.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ʿUmar b. al-Khattab: “Do not ask about people’s deeds, but ask about their innate nature (fitrah).”
