حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْعَلَاءِ الْحِمْصِيُّ ثنا جَدِّي إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ ثنا بَقِيَّةُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ ثَابِتِ بْنِ ثَوْبَانَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِي فَاطِمَةَ قَالَ

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مُرْنِي بِعَمَلٍ أَسْتَقِيمُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَعْمَلُهُ قَالَ «عَلَيْكَ بِالْجِهَادِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا مِثْلَ لَهُ» قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ حَدِّثْنِي بِعَمَلٍ أَسْتَقِيمُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَعْمَلُهُ قَالَ «عَلَيْكَ بِالْهِجْرَةِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا مِثْلَ لَهَا» قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ حَدِّثْنِي بِعَمَلٍ أَسْتَقِيمُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَعْمَلُهُ قَالَ «عَلَيْكَ بِالسُّجُودِ فَإِنَّكَ لَا تَسْجُدُ لِلَّهِ سَجْدَةً إِلَّا رَفَعَ اللهُ لَكَ بِهَا دَرَجَةً وَحَطَّ بِهَا خَطِيئَةً»

✧ I said: "O Messenger of God, command me a deed that I can adhere to and perform." He said: "You must strive in the way of God, for there is nothing like it." I said: "O Messenger of God, tell me a deed that I can adhere to and perform." He said: "You must emigrate, for there is nothing like it." I said: "O Messenger of God, tell me a deed that I can adhere to and perform." He said: "You must prostrate, for you will not prostrate to God a single prostration except that God raises you a degree and removes from you a sin."
