✧ I heard Abū Zamʿah al-Balawī, one of the companions of the tree—he pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ beneath it. One day he came to the mosque of al-Fusṭāṭ and stood in the open courtyard. He had heard some strictness from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr, so he said: “Do not be harsh with the people, for I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘A man of the Children of Israel killed ninety-seven people, then went to a monk and said: “I have killed ninety-seven people; do you find any repentance for me?” He said: “No,” so he killed the monk. Then he went to another monk and said: “I have killed ninety-eight people; do you find any repentance for me?” He said: “No,” so he killed him. Then he went to a third and said: “I have killed ninety-nine people, including two monks; do you find any repentance for me?” He said: “You have done great evil. If I were to say that God is not forgiving and merciful, I would lie. So repent to God.” He said: “As for me, I will not part from you after what you have said.” So he stayed with him on the condition that he not disobey him, and he served him. One day a man died and his reputation was ugly. When he was buried, he sat by his grave and wept bitterly. Then another died, and his reputation was good. When he was buried, he sat by his grave and laughed heartily. His companions found this objectionable, so they gathered before their leader and said: “How can you take in this killer of souls? He has done what you saw.” It troubled him and them. So he came to their leader once while accompanied by a companion of his, and he spoke with him, asking: “What do you command me?” He said: “Go and kindle a oven.” He did, then came back with the news that he had done so. He said: “Go and throw yourself into it.” The monk became distracted from him, and the other went and threw himself into the oven. Then the monk came to his senses and said: “I think the man has thrown himself into the oven because of my words.” He went to him and found him alive in the oven, sweating. He took him by the hand and pulled him out of the oven, then said: “It is not fitting for you to serve me; rather, I will serve you. Tell me about your weeping over the first deceased and your laughing over the other.” He said: “As for the first, when he was buried I saw the evil he was experiencing, and I remembered my own sins and wept. As for the other, I saw the good he was receiving and laughed.” After that he became one of the great men of the Children of Israel.’”
