✧ I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the Battle of Hunayn. We traveled on an intensely hot day, and we alighted under the shade of trees. When the sun declined, I put on my armor, mounted my horse, and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in his tent. I said: "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Has the time for departure come?" He said: "Yes." Then he said: "O Bilal!" Bilal sprang up from under a samurah tree as if his shadow were the shadow of a bird. He said: "At your service and at your command; I am your ransom." He said: "O Bilal, saddle my horse for me." He brought out a saddle whose two sides were of palm fiber, with no ornament and no pride. He saddled it, and he mounted, and we mounted. We faced them that evening and that night. The two cavalries exchanged glances. The Muslims turned their backs in flight, as Allah had said. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger." Then he spurred his horse forward, took a handful of dust, and the one who was closer to him than I was to him informed me that he threw it in their faces and said: "Ugly be the faces!" So Allah routed them. Ya'la b. 'Ata' said: Their sons narrated to me from their fathers that they said: "Not one of us remained but that his eyes and mouth were filled with dust, and we heard a clattering from the sky and the earth like the passing of iron over a basin." The wording is that of 'Affan.
