✧ There was a slave girl who tended sheep for her family. A man from among us called Ma'iz b. Malik came to her and had intercourse with her. She came and told my grandfather Hazzal. So my grandfather Hazzal began encouraging him to confess before the Prophet ﷺ, saying: Woe to you! If you do not do so, Allah will send down upon His Messenger [a revelation] informing him of your affair. He did not stop until Ma'iz b. Malik came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, it was fornication. He turned away from him three or four times. Then the Prophet ﷺ ordered that he be stoned. He said: A man faced him with the jawbone of a camel and struck his shin with it, knocking him down, and they stoned him until they killed him while he was calling for help from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: "Indeed, if he had come to me, he would not have returned to that." Then he said to the one who encouraged him: "Woe to you, O Hazzal! If you had covered him with your garment, it would have been better for you," and he struck his hand on the knee of Hazzal.
