✧ He informed him that he went on the campaign of Tabuk with the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ went aside to relieve himself, and I carried a water vessel with him before the dawn prayer. When the Messenger of God ﷺ returned to me, I began to pour water from the vessel onto his hands. He washed his hands three times, then rinsed his mouth and sniffed water, then washed his face. Then he tried to pull his jubba off his forearms, but the sleeves of his jubba were too tight, so he inserted his hands into the jubba up to the elbows, then he performed ablution over his leather socks. Then he came forward, and I came with him until we found that the people had put 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf forward to lead them in prayer. The Prophet ﷺ caught one of the two rak'ahs and prayed the last rak'ah with the people. When 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf said the salam, the Messenger of God ﷺ stood up to complete his prayer. That alarmed the Muslims, and they said subhan Allah excessively. When the Prophet ﷺ finished his prayer, he turned to them and said, 'You have done well' or 'You have been correct,' expressing his approval that they had prayed the prayer at its time. Ibn Shihab said: Isma'il b. Muhammad b. Sa'd narrated to me from Hamza b. al-Mughira b. Shu'ba the like of the hadith of 'Abbad b. Ziyad, and he added: Al-Mughira said: I rushed to inform 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf, but the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Leave him.' And he mentioned something similar.
