حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيِسِيُّ ثنا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى ح وَحَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ قَالَا ثنا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ حَدَّثَنِي سُلَيْمُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ قَالَ كُنَّا مُعَسْكِرِينَ مَعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بَعْدَ قَتْلِ عُثْمَانَ ؓماُ فَقَامَ مُرَّةُ بْنُ كَعْبٍ الْبَهْزِيُّ فَقَالَ
أَمَا وَاللهِ لَوْلَا شَيْءٌ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا قُمْتُ هَذَا الْمَقَامَ قَالَ فَلَمَّا سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةُ ذِكْرَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَجْلَسَ النَّاسَ فَقَالَ بَيْنَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ جُلُوسٌ إِذْ مَرَّ عُثْمَانُ مُرَجِّلًا مُعْدِقًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَتَخْرُجَنَّ فِتْنَةٌ مِنْ تَحْتِ رِجْلِي أَوْ مِنْ تَحْتِ قَدَمِي هَذَا وَمَنِ اتَّبَعَهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الْهُدَى» فَقُمْتُ حَتَّى أَخَذْتُ بِمَنْكِبِ عُثْمَانَ حَتَّى لَفَتُّهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ هَذَا؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ هَذَا وَمَنِ اتَّبَعَهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الْهُدَى» فَقَامَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ حَوَالَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ مِنْ عِنْدِ الْمِنْبَرِ فَقَالَ «إِنَّكَ لِصَاحِبُ هَذَا؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «أَمَا وَاللهِ إِنِّي حَاضِرٌ ذَلِكَ الْمَجْلِسَ وَلَوْ كُنْتُ أَعْلَمُ أَنَّ لِي فِي الْجَيْشِ مُصَدِّقًا لَكُنْتُ أَوَّلَ مَنْ تَكَلَّمَ بِهِ»

✧ He said: "By God, were it not for something I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ, I would not have stood in this place." When Muʿāwiyah heard mention of the Messenger of God ﷺ, he seated the people and said: "While we were sitting with the Messenger of God ﷺ, ʿUthmān passed by, having combed his hair and wearing a waist-wrapper. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'A tribulation will surely emerge from under my foot—or from under this foot of mine—and this man and whoever follows him will be upon guidance on that day.' I stood up and took hold of ʿUthmān's shoulder and turned him toward the Messenger of God ﷺ, and I said, 'This one?' He said, 'Yes, this one and whoever follows him will be upon guidance on that day.'" Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥawālah al-Anṣārī stood up from near the pulpit and said, "You are indeed the companion of this affair?" He said, "Yes." He said, "By God, I was present at that gathering, and if I had known that I had anyone in the army who would confirm it, I would have been the first to speak of it."
