✧ Al-Qaʿnabī narrated to us from Mālik, from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jābir b. ʿAtīk, from ʿAtīk b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAtīk—and he is the grandfather of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh, the father of his mother—that he informed him that Jābir b. ʿAtīk informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit ʿAbd Allāh b. Thābit and found him overcome. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out to him, but he did not answer. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return,” and he said, “We have been overcome for you, O Abū al-Rabīʿ.” The women shouted and wept, and Ibn ʿAtīk began to hush them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Leave them; for when it becomes due, let no weepers weep.” They said, “And what is the due, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “When he dies.” His daughter said, “By Allah, I had hoped that you would be a martyr, for you had completed your equipment.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Allah ﷻ has indeed placed his reward upon his intention. And what do you count as martyrdom?” They said, “Being killed in the path of Allah.” He said, “Martyrdom is seven besides being killed in the path of Allah: the one who dies of plague is a martyr, the one who drowns is a martyr, the one with pleurisy is a martyr, the one with a stomach disease is a martyr, the one who dies by fire is a martyr, the one who dies under a collapsed building is a martyr, and the woman who dies in childbirth is a martyr.”
