✧ I arrived in Madinah with two companions of mine. We sought hospitality from people, but no one hosted us. So we came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, severe hunger has befallen us, and we sought hospitality from people, but no one hosted us. He took us to his home, where he had four she-goats. He said: "O Miqdad, milk them." The Prophet ﷺ apportioned a share for each of us, and I used to do that. I set aside the share of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but he was late. I lay down on my bed, and my soul said to me: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to a household of the Ansar and ate and drank with them. If only you drank this drink. My soul kept at me until I drank it. When it settled in my belly, regret over what had passed and what had just happened seized me. My soul said to me: Now he will come thirsty and find nothing. So I lay down and covered myself with the garment. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and gave a greeting that the awake could hear but that would not wake the sleeping one. Then he came to the vessel, uncovered it, and saw nothing. He said: "O Allah, feed the one who fed me and give drink to the one who gave me drink." I seized the opportunity of his supplication and got up, took the blade, and approached the goats. I looked for the fattest among them to slaughter. I approached one and felt her, and found her full of milk. I looked at another and found her full of milk. I looked at the next and found her full of milk. I looked at all of them and found them all full of milk. I took the vessel and milked into it, then said: Drink. He said: "The news first, O Miqdad." I said: Drink, then the news. He said: "Some of your misdeed, O Miqdad." So he drank, then said: "Drink." I said: Drink, O Messenger of Allah. He drank until he was satisfied. Then I took from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and drank. Then I told him the news. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "This is a blessing that descended from heaven. Why did you not tell me so I could give your two companions to drink?" I said: If you and I get it, I do not care who misses it.
