حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ الْمَازِنِيُّ ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ ثنا مَسْلَمَةُ بْنُ عَلْقَمَةَ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ أَنَّ الْمِقْدَادَ بْنَ الْأَسْوَدِ اسْتَقْرَضَ مِنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ سَبْعَةَ آلَافٍ فَلَمَّا طَلَبَهَا مِنْهُ قَالَ
إِنَّمَا هِيَ أَرْبَعَةُ آلَافٍ فَخَاصَمَهُ إِلَى عُمَرَ فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ أَقْرَضْتُهُ سَبْعَةَ آلَافٍ وَقَالَ الْمِقْدَادُ تَحْلِفُ أَنَّهَا سَبْعَةُ آلَافٍ؟ فَقَالَ قَدْ أَنْصَفْتَ فَأَبَى أَنْ يَحْلِفَ فَقَالَ خُذْ مَا أَعْطَاكَ فَقَالَ وَاللهِ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ إِنَّمَا هِيَ سَبْعَةُ آلَافٍ؟ قَالَ فَمَا يَمْنَعُكَ أَنْ تَحْلِفَ إِنَّ هَذَا اللَّيْلُ وَهَذَا النَّهَارُ؟

✧ It is only four thousand. He disputed with him before Umar. Uthman said: I lent him seven thousand. Al-Miqdad said: Will you swear that it is seven thousand? He said: You have been fair. But he refused to swear. He said: Take what he gives you. He said: By Allah, besides whom there is no deity, it is only seven thousand? He said: What prevents you from swearing that this is night and this is day?
