حَدَّثَنَا الْمِقْدَامُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ثنا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ أَخْبَرَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ الْأَوْدِيُّ قَالَ كُنْتُ فِي دَارِ مَعْقِلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ بِالْبَصْرَةِ فَحَدَّثَتْنِي ابْنَتُهُ

أَنَّ أَبَاهَا لَمَّا ثَقُلَ بَلَغَ ذَلِكَ زِيَادًا فَجَاءَ حَتَّى اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلَى الْبَابِ وَجَلَسْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي فَدَخَلَ زِيَادٌ فَعَرَفَ فِي وَجْهِ أَبِي الْمَوْتَ فَقَالَ يَا مَعْقِلُ أَلَا تُزَوِّدُنَا مِنْكَ؟ فَقَدْ كَانَ اللهُ يَنْفَعُنَا بِأَشْيَاءَ نَسْمَعُهَا مِنْكَ فَقَالَ لَهُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَا مِنْ وَالِي أُمَّةٍ كَثُرَتْ أَوْ قَلَّتْ لَمْ يَعْدِلْ فِيهِمْ إِلَّا أَكَبَّهُ اللهُ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ فِي النَّارِ» فَنَكَّسَ رَأْسَهُ سَاعَةً ثُمَّ أَطْرَقَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ يَا مَعْقِلُ أَشَيْءٌ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ أُمْ مِنْ وَرَاءَ وَرَاءَ؟ فَقَالَ بَلْ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

✧ When her father became gravely ill, Ziyad heard of it and came until he sought permission at the door. I sat by my father, and Ziyad entered. He recognized death in my father’s face and said: “O Maʿqil, will you not provide us with something from you? God used to benefit us through things we heard from you.” He said to him: “I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘There is no governor over a community, whether large or small, who does not act justly among them except that God will cast him on his face into the Fire.’” He lowered his head for a while, then bowed it, then raised his head and said: “O Maʿqil, is this something you heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ, or is it from hearsay?” He said: “Rather, I heard it from the Messenger of God ﷺ.”
