حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُهَاجِرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَمِّ مَعْقِلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ قَالَ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ زِيَادٌ فَقَالَ

إِنَّ اللهَ كَانَ يَنْفَعُنَا بِالْعِلْمِ بِمُجَالَسَتِكَ وَكُنْتَ تُحَدِّثُنَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ مَعْقِلٌ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنْ وَلِيَ مِنْ أَمَرِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ شَيْئًا فَلَمْ يُحِطْهُمْ بِنَصِيحَةٍ كَمَا يُحِيطُ أَهْلَ بَيْتِهِ فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ» قَالَ مَا سَمِعْتُ هَذَا مِنْكَ قَبْلَ الْيَوْمِ قَالَ «مَا كُنْتُ لِأُحَدِّثَكَ بِهِ إِلَّا وَأَنَا عَلَى حَالَتِي هَذِهِ» قَالَ فَخَرَجَ زِيَادٌ يَجُرُّ ثَوْبَهُ

Translation

✧ Indeed, God used to benefit us through knowledge by sitting with you. You used to narrate to us from the Prophet ﷺ. Maʿqil said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: “Whoever is given charge of any affair of the Muslims and does not surround them with sincere counsel as he surrounds his own household, let him take his seat in the Fire.” He said: I have never heard this from you before today. He said: “I would not have narrated it to you except while I am in this state of mine.” He said: Then Ziyad went out dragging his garment.
