✧ While I was with the Messenger of God ﷺ, he set out on the expedition to Tabuk and traveled by night one night, and we traveled by night with him. Then he prayed the morning prayer and we prayed with him, then he went on in the morning and we went with him. The Messenger of God ﷺ rode on, and the groups and camels dispersed, eating as they went, and he was wearing a Najrani cloak. My eye caught the ring of the Messenger of God's she-camel while he was asleep, and I thought it would fall off. While I was like that, my she-camel let out a cry that broke it, and its hoof twisted, and the she-camel of the Messenger of God ﷺ was startled by its striking, and the Prophet ﷺ woke up. He turned and saw me, and said, 'O Mu'adh.' I said, 'Yes, O Messenger of God.' He said, 'Come closer.' I came closer, and he said that three times, and I came closer until the two mounts were side by side. Mu'adh said to himself, 'There is a word in my mind that has taken hold of me and made me ill; I have not asked you about it, and I have not heard anyone ask you about it.' He said, 'Ask me, O Mu'adh.' I said, 'Tell me, O Messenger of God, about a deed that will admit me to Paradise.' He said, 'Excellent, excellent! You have asked about a great matter, yet it is easy: you testify that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God, establish prayer, give zakat, and worship God alone.'
