✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ with two men of the Ash'aris, one on my right and the other on my left, while the Messenger of God ﷺ was cleaning his teeth. Both of them asked for appointment to office. He said: "O Abu Musa—or, O 'Abd Allah—" I said: By the One who sent you with the truth, they did not reveal to me what was in their minds, and I was not aware that they were seeking office. It was as if I could see his tooth-stick beneath his lip. He said to me: "We do not appoint over our work anyone who desires it. But go, O Abu Musa—or, O 'Abd Allah b. Qays—" So he sent him to Yemen, then followed him with Mu'adh b. Jabal. When he arrived, he placed a cushion for him and said: "Dismount." There was a man bound in chains. He said: "What is this?" He said: This man was a Jew, then he embraced Islam, then he returned to his religion—the religion of evil. He said: "I will not sit until he is killed, by the decree of God and His Messenger," three times. So he ordered it and he was killed.
