✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Ghalib b. 'Abd Allah al-Kalbi, of the Kalb of 'Awf b. Layth, on a raiding party in which I was among them. He ordered him to attack Banu al-Mulawwih at al-Kadid. He said: We set out, and when we were at Qudayd we met al-Harith b. Barsa' al-Laythi and captured him. He said: I have only come to become Muslim; I set out intending to go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: We said: If you are a Muslim, a night's tethering will not harm you, and if you are otherwise, we will secure you. So we tied him up, then left behind one of our small black men who was with us. We said to him: If he struggles with you, cut off his head. Then we came to al-Kadid at sunset, and we were on one side of the valley. My companions sent me as a lookout for them to a hill overlooking the settlement. He said: I climbed it, and when I was on its top and looked at the people, I lay flat. By Allah, I was on it looking when a man came out of his tent and said to his wife: By Allah, I see a black shape that I did not see at the beginning of the day. Look in your vessels, lest the dogs have dragged off some of them. She looked and said: By Allah, I do not miss anything from my vessels. He said: Give me my bow. She gave him a bow and two arrows with it. He said: He shot an arrow, and by Allah, it did not miss my side. He said: I pulled it out and remained still. He said: Then he shot the other and placed it in my shoulder. I pulled it out and remained still. He said to his wife: If it were something that moves, it would have moved by now; my two arrows have struck it. When morning comes, look for them and take them, lest the dogs ruin them. He said: Then he entered. When the people's animals had returned from their camels and sheep, and they had milked them and were at ease and settled, we launched the raid upon them. We killed and captured the sheep. Then we drove them away, and the cry of the people went out among their tribe, and a host came. They came in pursuit of us until we passed by Ibn al-Barsa', and we took him with us along with our companion whom we had left behind. He said: The people caught up with us until we saw them, and between us and them was nothing but the valley, with us facing one side and them on the other side in pursuit of us. Then Allah brought from where He willed what we had never seen before—rain such that no one could cross it. I saw them standing, looking at us while we drove the camels, and no man among them could reach us. When we had gone up with them, I will never forget the words of a poet among the Muslims as he drove them from behind them.
