✧ 'Awf b. al-Harith b. al-Tufayl, the son of 'A'ishah's ؓ maternal uncle, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, narrated to me that 'A'ishah was told that 'Abd Allah b. al-Zubayr said about a sale or gifts that 'A'ishah had given: 'By Allah, 'A'ishah must stop, or I will place her under a restriction.' She said: 'Did he say this?' They said: 'Yes.' She said: 'It is for Allah a vow upon me that I shall never speak a word to Ibn al-Zubayr ever.' Then Ibn al-Zubayr sought intercession with her through people when she prolonged his abandonment, and she said: 'By Allah, I will not accept anyone's intercession for him, nor will I break my vow ever.' When that grew long for Ibn al-Zubayr, he spoke to al-Miswar b. Makhramah and 'Abd al-Rahman b. al-Aswad b. 'Abd Yaghuth, who were from Banu Zuhrah, and said: 'I adjure you both by Allah to enter me upon 'A'ishah, for it is not lawful for her to vow to sever ties with me.' So al-Miswar b. Makhramah and 'Abd al-Rahman b. al-Aswad b. 'Abd Yaghuth brought him, wrapping him in their cloaks, until they sought permission to enter upon 'A'ishah. They said: 'Peace be upon the Prophet and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. May we enter?' 'A'ishah said: 'Enter.' They said: 'All of us, O Mother of the Believers?' She said: 'Yes, enter, all of you,' while 'A'ishah did not realize that Ibn al-Zubayr was with them. When they entered, Ibn al-Zubayr entered the curtain, embraced 'A'ishah, and began adjuring her and weeping. Al-Miswar b. Makhramah and 'Abd al-Rahman b. al-Aswad began adjuring 'A'ishah by Allah to speak to him and accept from him, and they said to her: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade abandonment as you know, and he said: "It is not lawful for a Muslim to abandon his brother for more than three nights."' When they repeated the reminder and the admonition to 'A'ishah, she began to remind them and weep and say: 'I have made a vow, and the matter of a vow is serious.' They continued with her until she spoke to Ibn al-Zubayr, then she freed forty slaves for her vow. Then she used to remember that vow of hers after she had freed forty slaves and weep until her tears soaked her veil.
