al-Mu'jam al-Kabir (al-Tabarani) 170

✧ The genealogy of Ali b. Abi Talib "who participated in the Battle of Badr, son of Abd al-Muttalib b. Hashim, son of Abd Manaf b. Qusayy, son of Kilab b. Murrah, son of Ka'b b. Lu'ayy, son of Ghalib b. Fihr, son of Malik, with the kunya of Abu al-Hasan".

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ بْنِ عَاصِمٍ الْجَمَّالُ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ رَاهَوَيْهِ أنا يَعْلَى بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي رَاشِدٍ قَالَ جَاءَ رِجَالٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ إِلَى عُبَيْدِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ فَقَالُوا إِنَّ إِخْوَانَكَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ وَعُثْمَانَ ؓ فَقَالَ

«وَمَا أَقْدَمَكُمْ شَيْءٌ غَيْرُ هَذَا؟» قَالُوا نَعَمْ قَالَ {تِلْكَ أُمَّةٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَلَكُمْ مَا كَسَبْتُمْ وَلَا تُسْأَلُونَ عَمَّا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ}

✧ He said, "Did anything bring you here other than this?" They said, "Yes." He said, {That is a nation which has passed away. It will have what it earned, and you will have what you earned, and you will not be asked about what they used to do.}
