حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ أَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ حَدَّثَنِي حُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ
أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُفْرَضْ عَلَيْنَا صِيَامُهُ فَمَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَصُومَ فَلْيَصُمْ فَإِنِّي صَائِمٌ» فَصَامَ النَّاسُ

✧ That he heard Muʿāwiyah delivering a sermon, saying: "O people of Madinah, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'This is the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ, and its fasting has not been made obligatory upon us. Whoever among you wishes to fast, let him fast, for I am fasting.'" So the people fasted.
