✧ When Abd al-Rahman b. Muljam struck Ali ؓ and he was carried to his house, visitors came to him. He praised God (glorified and exalted be He) and extolled Him, and invoked blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ. Then he said: Every person will meet what he flees from in his flight, and the appointed term drives the soul, and flight from its calamities does not avail. How many days have I pursued, examining their hidden depths about the secret of this matter, but God (glorified and exalted be He) willed only to conceal it. Alas, it is hidden knowledge. As for my testament to you: fear God (glorified and exalted be He) and associate nothing with Him, and do not neglect the Sunnah of Muhammad ﷺ. Uphold these two pillars, and you will be free of blame as long as they are not dispersed. Each person will be burdened according to his effort, and the ignorant will be shown leniency by a merciful Lord, a sound religion, and a knowledgeable Imam. We were among winds and the scattering of branches, under the shade of a cloud whose center has vanished, and a captive neighbor will drive it away, bringing days in succession, then it fell. After him you will be left with a hollow corpse, still after motion, silent after speech. Indeed, that is a greater admonition for those who reflect than the speech of the eloquent. Your caller is a caller on the watch for the meeting. Tomorrow you will see my days, and my secrets will be revealed. God (glorified and exalted be He) will not show me favor unless I draw near to Him through piety, so that He forgives excess. Peace be upon you until the day of inevitability. If I remain, I am the guardian of my own blood; if I perish, then annihilation is my appointed time. Forgiveness for me is a means of nearness to God, and for you it is a good deed, so forgive, may God forgive us and you. {Do you not love that God should forgive you? And God is Forgiving, Merciful.} Then he said:
