✧ That the Messenger of God ﷺ went out at an hour when he did not usually go out. Then Abū Bakr went out, and he said to him, "What brought you out, O Abū Bakr?" He said, "Hunger brought me out." He said, "And I, what brought me out is what brought you out." Then ʿUmar went out, and he said to him, "What brought you out, O ʿUmar?" He said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, hunger brought me out." Then some of his companions came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said to them, "Come with us to the house of Abū al-Haytham b. al-Tayhān." They went, and when they reached Abū al-Haytham's house, his wife said, "Abū al-Haytham has gone to fetch fresh water for us, so go around to the garden." She opened the garden gate for them, and they sat down. Abū al-Haytham came, and his wife said to him, "Do you know who is with you?" He said, "No." She said, "With you are the Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions." He entered, tied his horse to a palm tree, then came to them and greeted them warmly and welcomed them. Then he went to his date-palm grove, brought a cluster, picked fresh dates for them, and brought it and poured it before them. Then Abū al-Haytham reached for a small flock of his in a corner of the garden to slaughter a sheep for them. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "As for one with milk, no." He took a sheep, slaughtered it, skinned it, cut it into pieces, and cooked it with water and salt. Then he went to his wife and asked her, "Do you have anything?" She said, "Yes, we have some barley that we were saving." They ground it together, then she kneaded it and baked it. Abū al-Haytham broke the bread and poured that cooked meat over it. Then he brought it to the Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions, and they ate. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "O Abū al-Haytham, do you not have a servant?" He said, "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, we have no servant." He said, "When you hear that captives have come to us, come to us and we will provide you with a servant." Captives came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and Abū al-Haytham came to him while two boys—or he said two youths—were before him. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "O Abū al-Haytham, choose one of them"—or he said, "choose between them." Abū al-Haytham said, "O Messenger of God, choose for me." The Messenger of God ﷺ rolled up his sleeves and said, "The one whose advice is sought is entrusted. O Abū al-Haytham, take this one." When Abū al-Haytham turned away with him, he said, "O Abū al-Haytham, treat him well, for I saw him praying." He said, "Yes, we will feed him from what we eat and clothe him from what we wear, and we will not burden him with work he cannot bear." Abū al-Haytham went to his family, and they rejoiced greatly and said, "Praise be to God who provided us with a servant to serve us and help us with our property." Abū al-Haytham said, "The Messenger of God ﷺ enjoined me concerning him." His wife said, "Yes, we will feed him from what we eat and clothe him from what we wear, and we will not burden him with work he cannot bear." He said, "The Messenger of God ﷺ enjoined me concerning him." His wife said, "Glory be to God! A servant whom God and His Messenger have given us—do you want to deprive us of him?" Abū al-Haytham said to the boy, "You are free for the sake of God. If you like to stay with us, we will feed you from what we eat and clothe you from what we wear, and we will not burden you with work except what you can bear. And if you wish, go wherever you wish."
