✧ "The first to pledge allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ on the day of al-ʿAqabah was Abū al-Haytham b. al-Tayhān. He said, 'O Messenger of God, between us and the people there are ropes—and ropes means alliances and covenants—so perhaps we will cut them, then you will return to your people, and we will have cut the ropes and fought the people for your sake.' The Messenger of God ﷺ laughed at his words and said, 'Blood for blood, destruction for destruction.' When Abū al-Haytham was satisfied with what the Messenger of God ﷺ said in reply, he turned to his people and said, 'O people, this is the Messenger of God ﷺ. I bear witness that he is truthful, and today he is in God's sanctuary and safety, among his people and clan. Know that if you bring him out, the Arabs will cast you off with a single bow. If you are pleased to fight in the way of God and to lose wealth and children, then call him to your land, for he is truly the Messenger of God ﷺ. But if you fear desertion, then from now on.' ʿAbdullāh said, 'We have accepted from God and His Messenger what He has given us, and we have given you of ourselves what you asked of us, O Messenger of God. So let us, O Abū al-Haytham, be alone with the Messenger of God ﷺ to pledge allegiance to him.' Abū al-Haytham said, 'I am the first to pledge allegiance.' Then they all pledged allegiance. Satan shouted from the top of the mountain and said, 'O Quraysh, this is the Khazraj and the Aws allying themselves with Muḥammad to fight you.' They were alarmed and frightened by that, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'Do not let this sound frighten you, for it is only the enemy of God, Iblīs; no one you fear hears him.' The Messenger of God ﷺ stood up and shouted at Satan, saying, 'O son of Azabb, this is your doing, and I will soon be free to deal with you.'"
