حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثنا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ثنا سَهْلُ بْنُ أَبِي الصَّلْتِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ عَلِيًّا بَعَثَ إِلَى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ فَجِيءَ بِهِ فَقَالَ مَا خَلَّفَكَ عَنْ هَذَا الْأَمْرِ؟ فَقَالَ

دَفَعَ إِلَيَّ ابْنُ عَمِّكَ يَعْنِي رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ سَيْفًا فَقَالَ قَاتِلْ بِهِ مَا قُوتِلَ بِهِ الْعَدُوُّ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَقْتُلُ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضًا فَاعْمَدْ بِهِ إِلَى صَخْرَةٍ فَاضْرِبْهُ بِهَا ثُمَّ الْزَمْ بَيْتَكَ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَكَ مَنِيَّةٌ قَاضِيَةٌ أَوْ يَدٌ خَاطِئَةٌ قَالَ خَلُّوا عَنْهُ

✧ Your cousin—meaning the Messenger of God ﷺ—handed me a sword and said: 'Fight with it as long as the enemy is fought with it. But when you see people killing one another, take it to a rock and strike it against it, then keep to your house until a decree of death or an erring hand comes to you.' He said: 'Let him go.'
