حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى السَّاجِيُّ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ الْأَخْرَمِ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ قَالَا ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ثنا عَبَّادُ بْنُ مُوسَى السَّعْدِيُّ ثنا يُونُسُ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ قَالَ

مَرَرْتُ فَإِذَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى الصَّفَا وَاضِعًا خَدَّهُ عَلَى خَدِّ رَجُلٍ فَذَهَبْتُ فَلَمْ أَلْبَثْ أَنْ نَادَانِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «يَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تُسَلِّمَ؟» فَقَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ رَأَيْتُكَ فَعَلْتَ بِهَذَا الرَّجُلِ شَيْئًا لَمْ تَفْعَلْهُ بِأَحَدٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ فَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَقْطَعَكَ مِنْ حَدِيثِكَ فَمَنْ كَانَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ كَانَ جِبْرِيلُ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَ مَا لِمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ لَمْ يُسَلِّمْ؟ أَمَا إِنَّهُ لَوْ سَلَّمَ لَرَدَدْنَا عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامَ قَالَ فَمَا قَالَ لَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «مَا زَالَ يُوصِينِي بِالْجَارِ حَتَّى كُنْتُ أَنْتَظِرُ أَنْ يَأْمُرَنِي بِتَوْرِيثِهِ»

✧ I passed by and saw the Messenger of God ﷺ on al-Safa with his cheek against the cheek of a man. I went on, and it was not long before the Messenger of God ﷺ called me and said: 'O Muhammad b. Maslamah, what prevented you from greeting?' Muhammad b. Maslamah said: 'O Messenger of God, I saw you doing something with this man that you had not done with anyone else among the people, and I disliked to cut you off from your conversation. Who was it, O Messenger of God?' He said: 'It was Gabriel ﷺ. He said: "What is wrong with Muhammad b. Maslamah that he did not greet? If he had greeted, we would have returned the greeting to him."' He said: 'What did he say to you, O Messenger of God?' He said: 'He kept advising me about the neighbor until I expected that he would command me to make him an heir.'
