حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنْ أبِي إِسْحَاقَ أَخْبَرَنِي كُدَيْرٌ الضَّبِّيُّ

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَعْرَابِيًّا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي بِعَمَلٍ يُقَرِّبُنِي مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ وَيُبَاعِدُنِي مِنَ النَّارِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «أَوَهُمَا أَهَمَّتَاكَ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «تَقُولُ الْعَدْلَ وَتُعْطِي الْفَضْلَ» قَالَ وَاللهِ مَا أَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ أَقُولَ الْعَدْلَ كُلَّ سَاعَةٍ وَمَا أَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ أُعْطِيَ فَضْلَ مَالِي قَالَ «تُطْعِمُ الطَّعَامَ وَتُفْشِي السَّلَامَ» قَالَ هَذِهِ أَيْضًا شَدِيدَةٌ فَقَالَ «فَهَلْ لَكَ إِبِلٌ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «فَانْظُرْ إِلَى بَعِيرٍ مِنْ إِبِلِكَ وَسِقَاءٍ ثُمَّ اعْمِدْ إِلَى أَهْلَ بَيْتٍ لَا يَشْرَبُونَ الْمَاءَ إِلَّا غِبًّا فَاسِقِهِمْ فَلَعَلَّكَ لَا تُهْلِكُ بَعِيرَكَ وَلَا تَخْرِقُ سِقَاءَكَ حَتَّى تَجِبَ لَكَ الْجَنَّةُ» فَانْطَلَقَ الْأَعْرَابِيُّ يُكَبِّرُ فَمَا انْخَرَقَ سِقَاؤُهُ وَلَا هَلَكَ بَعِيرُهُ حَتَّى قُتِلَ شَهِيدًا

Translation

✧ A bedouin man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'Tell me of a deed that will bring me near to Paradise and keep me far from the Fire.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Are these two your greatest concerns?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Speak the truth and give from your surplus.' He said, 'By Allah, I cannot speak the truth at every moment, and I cannot give from the surplus of my wealth.' He said, 'Feed people and spread peace.' He said, 'This is also difficult.' He said, 'Do you have camels?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Then look to a camel from your camels and a water skin, then go to a household who do not drink water except every other day, and give them water. Perhaps you will not lose your camel or tear your water skin until Paradise becomes due for you.' The bedouin went off saying 'Allahu Akbar,' and neither his water skin was torn nor his camel lost until he was killed as a martyr.
