✧ Abu al-Yasar al-Ansari said: I was sitting with the Messenger of God ﷺ when Abu ʿAmir al-Ashʿari came to him and said: He sent me on such-and-such [an expedition], then I came to Muʾtah. When the ranks were drawn up, Jaʿfar mounted his horse, put on his coat of mail, took the banner, and advanced on foot until he reached the people. Then he called out, “Who will convey this [banner] to its owner?” A man from the people said, “I will.” So he sent it with him, then he advanced and struck with his sword until he was killed. The eyes of the Messenger of God ﷺ overflowed with tears. He prayed Zuhr with us, then entered and did not speak to us. Then the ʿAsr prayer was called, and he came out and prayed, then entered and did not speak to us. He did the same at Maghrib and ʿIsha, entering and not speaking to us. Normally when he prayed he would turn his face toward us, but he came out to us at Fajr at the time he used to come out, while I and Abu ʿAmir al-Ashʿari were sitting. He sat between us and said, “Shall I tell you about a dream I saw? I entered Paradise and saw Jaʿfar with two wings stained with blood, and Zayd facing him, and Ibn Rawahah with them, as if he were turning away from them. I will tell you about that: when Jaʿfar advanced and saw death, he did not turn his face away; Zayd was the same; but Ibn Rawahah turned his face away.”
