✧ I set out with my father seeking knowledge among this neighborhood of the Ansar before they perished. The first one we met was Abu al-Yasar al-Sulami, the Companion of the Prophet ﷺ. He had a slave boy with him. He was wearing a striped cloak, and his slave boy was wearing a striped cloak, and [there was also] a Maʿafiri garment and a copy of the Quran with a strap. My father said to him, “I think I see a trace of anger on your face.” He said, “Yes, I was owed money by so-and-so, son of so-and-so, the highwayman. I went to his family and said, ‘Is he there?’ They said, ‘No.’ Then a young son of his came out to me, and I said to him, ‘Where is your father?’ He said, ‘He heard your voice and went into my mother’s curtained bed.’ I said, ‘Come out to me, for I know where you are.’ So he came out to me. I said, ‘What made you hide from me?’ He said, ‘By God, I will tell you and not lie to you. I feared, by God, that if I spoke to you I would lie to you, or if I promised you I would break my promise. I was a Companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and I was, by God, in difficulty.’ He said, ‘By God?’ I said, ‘By God.’ He said, ‘By God?’ I said, ‘By God.’ He said, ‘By God?’ I said, ‘By God.’ Then I forgot about the document, so I erased the debt and said, ‘If you find a means to pay, then pay; otherwise, you are absolved.’ I bear witness—these two eyes of mine saw, and he placed his two fingers on his eyes, and these two ears of mine heard, and he placed his two fingers in his ears, and this heart of mine comprehended, and he pointed to the place of his heart—that the Messenger of God ﷺ said, ‘Whoever gives respite to one in difficulty or waives [the debt] for him, God will shade him in His shade on a day when there is no shade but His shade.’”
