حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَمْزَةَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ ثنا حَيْوَةُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ الْحِمْصِيُّ ثنا بَقِيَّةُ عَنْ بَحِيرِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ مَعْدَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي بِلَالٍ عَنِ الْعِرْبَاضِ بْنِ سَارِيَةَ قَالَ
وَعَظَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَوْعِظَةً وَجَلَّتْ مِنْهَا الْقُلُوبُ وَذَرَفَتْ مِنْهَا الْأَعْيُنُ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَأَنَّهَا مَوْعِظَةُ مُوَدِّعٍ فَاعْهَدْ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ «عَلَيْكُمْ بِتَقْوَى اللهِ وَالسَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ وَإِنْ كَانَ عَبْدًا حَبَشِيًّا فَمَنْ يَعِشْ مِنْكُمْ بَعْدِي فَسَيَرَى اخْتِلَافًا كَثِيرًا فَعَلَيْكُمْ بِسُنَّتِي وَسُنَّةِ الْخُلَفَاءِ الرَّاشِدِينَ الْمَهْدِيِّينَ عَضُّوا عَلَيْهَا بِالنَّوَاجِذِ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَمُحْدَثَاتِ الْأُمُورِ وَكُلُّ مُحْدَثَةٍ ضَلَالَةٌ»

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ admonished us with an exhortation that made the hearts tremble and the eyes shed tears. We said, “O Messenger of God, it is as if it is the admonition of one bidding farewell, so give us a covenant.” He said: “I enjoin upon you fear of God, listening and obedience, even if it is an Abyssinian slave. Whoever of you lives after me will see much disagreement. So hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided, divinely guided caliphs; bite onto it with the molar teeth. And beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is misguidance.”
