حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ ثنا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى ح وَحَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ قَالَا ثنا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ عَنْ ضَمْرَةَ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو السُّلَمِيِّ
أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عِرْبَاضَ بْنَ سَارِيَةَ السُّلَمِيَّ يَقُولُ وَعَظَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَوْعِظَةً ذَرَفَتْ مِنْهُ الْأَعْيُنُ وَوَجِلَتْ مِنْهُ الْقُلُوبُ قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَذِهِ مَوْعِظَةُ مُوَدِّعٍ فَمَا تَعْهَدْ إِلَيْنَا؟ قَالَ «لَقَدْ تَرَكْتُكُمْ عَلَى الْبَيْضَاءِ لَيْلُهَا كَنَهَارِهَا لَا يَزِيغُ عَنْهَا بَعْدِي إِلَّا هَالِكٌ وَمَنْ يَعِشْ مِنْكُمْ فَسَيَرَى اخْتِلَافًا كَثِيرًا فَعَلَيْكُمْ بِمَا عَرَفْتُمْ مِنْ سُنَّتِي وَسُنَّةِ الْخُلَفَاءِ الرَّاشِدِينَ وَعَلَيْكُمْ بِالطَّاعَةِ وَإِنْ عَبْدًا حَبَشِيًّا عَضُّوا عَلَيْهَا بِالنَّوَاجِذِ فَإِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُ كَالْجَمَلِ الْأَنِفِ حَيْثُمَا قِيدَ انْقَادَ»

✧ That he heard ʿIrbaḍ b. Sāriya al-Sulamī saying: The Messenger of God ﷺ admonished us with an exhortation that made the eyes weep and the hearts tremble. We said, “O Messenger of God, this is the admonition of one bidding farewell, so what do you enjoin upon us?” He said, “I have left you upon the clear white path; its night is like its day. None deviates from it after me but is destroyed. Whoever of you lives will see much disagreement. So hold fast to what you know of my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs. And you must obey, even if it is an Abyssinian slave. Bite onto it with the molar teeth. Indeed, the believer is like a compliant camel: wherever it is led, it follows.”
