✧ He witnessed Uthman b. Affan during the days of the Tabuk expedition, in the army of hardship. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded charity, strength, and mutual consolation. The Christians of the Arabs had written to Heraclius: 'This man who has come forth claiming prophethood has perished, and years of drought have afflicted them and destroyed their wealth. If you want to restore your religion, now is the time.' So he sent a man from their nobles called al-Danad, and equipped with him forty thousand. When that reached the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, he wrote among the Arabs, and he would sit every day on the minbar, supplicating Allah and saying: 'O Allah, if this band perishes, You will not be worshipped on earth.' The people had no strength. Uthman b. Affan had equipped a caravan to Syria, intending to provision it. He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, here are two hundred camels with their saddles and blankets, and two hundred uqiyyahs.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ praised Allah and the people said takbir. Then he stood in another position and commanded charity. Uthman b. Affan stood up and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, and these two hundred and two hundred uqiyyahs.' He said takbir and the people said takbir. Uthman brought the camels and brought the wealth and poured it before him. I heard him say: 'Nothing Uthman does after today will harm him.'
