حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ غَنَّامٍ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْمُهَلَّبِ عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَدَى رَجُلَيْنِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ بِرَجُلٍ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ مِنْ بَنِي عُقَيْلٍ أَسَرَتْهُمُا ثَقِيفٌ وَكَانَتْ بَنُو عَقِيلٍ حُلَفَاءَ لِثَقِيفٍ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَأَنَّ ثَقِيفًا أَسَرَتْ رَجُلَيْنِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَأَسَرَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي عُقَيْلٍ وَأَخَذُوا نَاقَةً لَهُ قد سَبَقَتِ الْحَاجَّ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَكَانَتِ النَّاقَةُ إِذَا سَبَقَتْ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ لَمْ يُمْنَعْ حَوْضٌ تَشْرُعُ فِيهِ وَلَا مِنْ كَلَأٍ رَعَا فِيهِ فَجَلَسَ الرَّجُلُ فِي مَكَانٍ فَمَرَّ بِهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ فِيمَا أُحْبَسُ أَنَا وَسَابِقَةُ الْحَاجِّ؟ فَقَالَ «حَبَسْنَاكَ بِجَرِيرَةِ حُلَفَائِكَ ثَقِيفٍ» فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ransomed two Muslim men with a man from the polytheists of Banu ʿUqayl whom Thaqif had captured. Banu ʿUqayl had been allies of Thaqif in the pre-Islamic era, and Thaqif had captured two Muslim men, so the Muslims captured a man from Banu ʿUqayl. They also took a she-camel of his that had outstripped the pilgrims' mounts in the pre-Islamic era. In the pre-Islamic era, when a she-camel won a race, it was not prevented from any watering place it wished to drink from, nor from any pasture it wished to graze in. The man sat in a place and the Prophet ﷺ passed by him, and he said: ‘O Muhammad, why am I being detained, along with the winner of the pilgrims' race?’ He replied: ‘We detained you because of the crime of your allies, Thaqif.’ And he mentioned the hadith.
