حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ التُّسْتَرِيُّ ثنا بِشْرُ بْنُ آدَمَ ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَاصِمٍ ثنا مُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ لَيْثِ بْنِ أَبِي سُلَيْمٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ زَاذَانَ قَالَ
كُنَّا مَعَ عَابِسٍ الْغِفَارِيِّ عَلَى ظَهْرِ أَجَارٍ فَأَبْصَرَ أُنَاسًا يَتَحَمَّلُونَ فَقَالَ مَا شَأْنُ هَؤُلَاءِ؟ فَقَالَ يَفِرُّونَ مِنَ الطَّاعُونِ قَالَ يَا طَاعُونُ خُذْنِي إِلَيْكَ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَمٍّ لَهُ وَكَانَتْ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ تَمَنَّى الْمَوْتَ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا يَتَمَنَّيَنَّ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَوْتَ» قَالَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ بَادِرُوا بِالْأَعْمَالِ سِتًّا إِمَارَةُ السُّفَهَاءِ وَكَثْرَةُ الشُّرَطِ وَبَيْعُ الْحُكْمِ واسْتِخْفَافٌ بِالدَّمِ وَقَطِيعَةُ الرَّحِمِ وَنَشْوٌ يَتَّخِذُونَ الْقُرْآنَ مَزَامِيرَ يُقَدِّمُونَ أَحَدُهُمْ لِيُغَنِّيَهُمْ وَإِنْ كَانَ أَقَلُّهُمْ فِقْهًا

✧ We were with ʿĀbis al-Ghifārī on a rooftop, and he saw people loading up. He asked, 'What is the matter with these?' It was said, 'They are fleeing from the plague.' He said, 'O plague, take me to you!' A cousin of his, who was a companion, said, 'He wishes for death, although I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Let none of you wish for death.' He said, 'I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Hasten to do good deeds before six things: the rule of fools, the proliferation of police, the selling of judgment, the cheapening of blood, the severing of family ties, and a generation that takes the Qur'an as musical instruments, putting forward one of them to sing to them even if he is the least knowledgeable among them in jurisprudence.'
