✧ He informed him that ʿItban b. Malik, one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and among those from the Ansar who witnessed Badr, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I have noticed a decline in my eyesight, and I lead my people in prayer. When the rains come, the valley between me and them floods, and I cannot reach their mosque to lead them in prayer. I would love, O Messenger of Allah, for you to pray in a place that I will take as a prayer place.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I will do so, if Allah wills.” ʿItban said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and ʿUmar set out early the next day, when the day had risen. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked permission, and I gave him permission. He did not sit down until he entered the house. He said: “Where would you like me to pray in your house?” I pointed to a corner of the house. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood, said the takbir, and we stood and formed rows behind him. We prayed two rakʿahs. Then a number of people gathered in the house. Someone said: “Where is Malik b. al-Dukhaykhin?” Some of them said: “He is a hypocrite; he does not love Allah and His Messenger.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do not say that. Do you not see that he has said ‘There is no god but Allah,’ seeking thereby the Face of Allah?” They said: “Allah knows best. We see his face and his counsel toward the hypocrites.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Allah has forbidden the Fire for whoever says ‘There is no god but Allah,’ seeking thereby the Face of Allah.” Muhammad said: “Then I asked al-Husayn b. Muhammad, one of the Banu Salim among their leaders, about the hadith of Mahmud, and he confirmed it.”
