حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الدِّمَشْقِيُّ ثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ صَالِحٍ الْوُحَاظِيُّ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ الطَّائِيُّ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ قِيرَاطٍ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ ثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ابْنُ بِنْتِ شُرَحْبِيلَ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ دُحَيْمٍ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَا ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ شُعَيْبِ بْنِ شَابُورَ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ الطَّائِيُّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ عَبْدٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّهُ أَتَى فِي نَاسٍ يُرِيدُونَ أَنْ يُغَيِّرُوا أَسْمَاءَهُمْ قَالَ
فَلَمَّا رَآنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ دَعَانِي وَأَنَا غُلَامٌ حَدَثٌ فَقَالَ «مَا اسْمُكَ؟» فَقُلْتُ عَتَلَةُ بْنُ عَبْدٍ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «بَلْ أَنْتَ عُتْبَةُ بْنُ عَبْدٍ أَرِنِي سَيْفَكَ» فَسَلَّهُ فَلَمَّا نَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ فَإِذَا هُوَ سَيْفٌ فِيهِ دِقَّةُ وَضَعْفٌ فَقَالَ «لَا تَضْرِبْ بِهَذَا وَلَكِنِ اطْعَنْ بِهِ طَعْنًا»

✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me, he called me while I was a young boy. He said, 'What is your name?' I said, 'ʿAtalah b. ʿAbd.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Rather, you are ʿUtbah b. ʿAbd. Show me your sword.' He unsheathed it, and when he looked at it, it was a sword with thinness and weakness. He said, 'Do not strike with this, but thrust with it, a thrust.'
