حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثَنَا عَارِمٌ أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ ثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ ثَنَا عَدِيُّ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ ثَنَا رَجَاءُ بْنُ حَيْوَةَ وَالْعُرْسُ بْنُ عُمَيْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ قَالَ
كَانَ بَيْنِ امْرِئِ الْقَيْسِ وَبَيْنَ أَحَدٍ خُصُومَةٌ فَاخْتَصَمَا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَسَأَلَ الْحَضْرَمِيَّ الْبَيِّنَةَ فَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ بَيِّنَةٌ فَقَضَى عَلَى امْرِئِ الْقَيْسِ بِالْيَمِينِ فَقَالَ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إنْ أَمْكَنْتَهُ مِنَ الْيَمِينِ ذَهَبَتْ وَاللهِ أَرْضِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ كَاذِبًا لَقِيَ اللهَ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ» قَالَ رَجَاءُ بْنُ حَيْوَةَ فَتَلَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا} الْآيَةَ قَالَ امْرُؤُ الْقَيْسِ فَمَاذَا لِي إنْ تَرَكْتُهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «الْجَنَّةُ» قَالَ فَإِنِّي أُشْهِدُكَ أَنِّي تَرَكْتُهَا

✧ There was a dispute between Imruʾ al-Qays and another man, so they brought their case to the Prophet ﷺ. He asked the Hadrami for evidence, but he had no evidence, so he ruled that Imruʾ al-Qays should take an oath. The Hadrami said, “O Messenger of God, if you let him take the oath, by God, my land will be lost.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Whoever swears a false oath will meet God while He is angry with him.” Rajaʾ b. Haywa said: The Messenger of God ﷺ then recited: {Indeed, those who purchase with the covenant of God and their oaths a small price...} the verse. Imruʾ al-Qays said, “What will I get if I give it up, O Messenger of God?” He said, “Paradise.” He said, “Then I call you to witness that I give it up.”
