✧ When this verse was revealed: “And eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct for you from the black thread of dawn,” I took two ropes, one black and the other white, and placed them under my pillow. I kept raising them in the night, but the white did not become distinct for me from the black. I mentioned that to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: “O Ibn Ḥātim, your pillow is indeed wide. He only said: Eat and drink until the whiteness of day becomes distinct for you from the blackness of night.”
