✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ summoned me when he wanted to send me with wealth to Abu Sufyan to distribute among Quraysh in Makkah after the conquest. He said: “Find a companion.” ʿAmr b. Umayya al-Damri came to me and said: “I have heard that you intend to set out and are seeking a companion, and I am your companion.” The Messenger of God ﷺ had said: “When you find a companion, inform me.” So I informed him, and he said: “Who?” I said: “ʿAmr b. Umayya al-Damri.” He said: “When he descends into the land of his people, beware of him, for the poet said: ‘Your brother al-Bakri, so do not trust him.’” We set out until we reached al-Abwaʾ. He said: “I need something from my people, so wait for me.” I said: “Go rightly guided.” When he turned away, I remembered the words of the Messenger of God ﷺ, so I tied my camel tightly, then set off urging it quickly. When I was at al-ʿAsafir, there he was confronting me with a group. He said: “I urged my camel on, and I heard him, and when he saw that I had outdistanced him, they turned back, and he came to me and said: ‘I had a need from my people.’ I said: ‘Indeed.’ Then we went on until we arrived in Makkah, and I handed over the wealth to Abu Sufyan.”
