حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ أَبِي الطَّاهِرِ بْنِ السَّرْحِ الْمِصْرِيُّ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَزِيزٍ ثَنَا سَلَامَةُ بْنُ رَوْحٍ عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ حَدَّثَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ أَنَّ الْمِسْوَرَ بْنَ مَخْرَمَةَ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ عَوْفٍ
أَخْبَرَهُ وَكَانَ قَدْ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ إِلَى الْبَحْرَيْنِ فَأَتَى بِجِزْيَتِهَا وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هُوَ صَالَحَ أَهْلَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعَلَاءَ بْنَ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ فَقَدِمَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بِمَالٍ مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ فَسَمِعَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ بِقُدُومِ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ فَوَافَوْا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ انْصَرَفَ فَتَعَرَّضُوا لَهُ فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حِينَ رَآهُمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَظُنُّكُمْ سَمِعْتُمْ أَنَّ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ قَدِمَ بِشَيْءٍ؟» قَالُوا أَجَلْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «فَأَبْشِرُوا وَأْمَلُوا مَا يَسُرُّكُمْ فَوَاللهِ مَا الْفَقْرُ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَكِنْ أَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ تُبْسَطَ الدُّنْيَا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَا بُسِطَتْ عَلَى مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ فَتَنَافَسُوا فِيهَا كَمَا تَنَافَسُوهَا وَتُهْلِكَكُمْ كَمَا أَهْلَكَتْهُمْ»

✧ He informed him—and he had been present at Badr with the Messenger of God ﷺ—that the Messenger of God ﷺ sent Abu ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrah to al-Bahrayn and he brought back its jizyah. The Messenger of God ﷺ himself had made peace with the people of al-Bahrayn and appointed al-ʿAlaʾ b. al-Hadrami as governor over them. Abu ʿUbaydah arrived with wealth from al-Bahrayn, and the Ansar heard of Abu ʿUbaydah's arrival, so they came to the Messenger of God ﷺ at the dawn prayer. When the Messenger of God ﷺ had prayed, he turned away, and they presented themselves before him. The Messenger of God ﷺ smiled when he saw them, then said: "I think you have heard that Abu ʿUbaydah has arrived with something?" They said: "Yes, O Messenger of God." He said: "Rejoice and hope for what pleases you. For by God, it is not poverty that I fear for you, but I fear for you that the world will be spread out before you as it was spread out before those before you, and you will compete for it as they competed for it, and it will destroy you as it destroyed them."
