✧ I came to Madinah and sat among some elders in the mosque of the Prophet ﷺ. An old man came leaning on a staff, and some of the people said: This is a man of the people of Paradise. He went behind a pillar and prayed two rakʿahs. I went to him and said: Some of the people claimed that you are a man of the people of Paradise. He said: Paradise belongs to God; He admits whomever He wills. I saw a vision in the time of the Prophet ﷺ. I saw as if a man came to me and said: Go. He took me along a great highway. A path appeared on my left, and I wanted to take it, but he said: You are not one of its people. Then another path appeared on my right, and I took it until I came to a slippery mountain. He took my hand and threw me up, and there I was on its summit, unable to settle or control myself. Then I saw a pillar with a handle of gold at its top. He took my hand and threw me up until I grasped the handle. I related it to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: “You have seen good. The great highway is the gathering place. The path that appeared on your left is the path of the people of the Fire, and you are not one of its people. The path that appeared on your right is the path of the people of Paradise. The slippery mountain is the abode of the martyrs. The handle you held fast to is the handhold of Islam, and you will remain holding it, God willing, until you die. I hope to be one of the people of Paradise.” And he was ʿAbdullah b. Salam.
