✧ I entered the mosque of Madinah, and a man came and prayed two rakʿahs, making them brief, with a trace of humility upon him. A man said: Whoever would like to look at a man of the people of Paradise, let him look at this one. I followed him and told him, and he said: Glory be to God; no one should say what he does not know. I will tell you why that is. I saw a vision and related it to the Prophet ﷺ. I saw as if I were in a garden—and he mentioned its vastness, beauty, and greenness—with in its middle an iron pillar whose base was in the earth and its top in the sky. At its top was a handle. He said to me: Climb. I said: I cannot. Then a servant came to me and took hold of my clothes—that is, from behind me—and struck at the top of it, saying: Hold fast. I awoke with it in my hand. I related it to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: “The garden is Islam, the pillar is the pillar of Islam, and the handle is the firm handhold, so you are upon Islam.” And behold, he was ʿAbdullah b. Salam.
