✧ Peace be upon you, O Abu Khubayb—he said it three times. Then he said, 'I forbade you from this'—he said it three times. 'You were indeed one who fasted much, prayed much, and maintained family ties.' That reached al-Hajjaj—the stance of ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar—so he had him brought down and threw him into the graves of the Jews. He sent to Asmaʾ bt. Abi Bakr, whose sight had gone, ordering her to come to him, but she refused. He sent to her: 'You will come, or I will send someone to drag you by your hair.' She said, 'By God, I will not come to you until you send someone to drag me by my hair.' His messenger came and told him, so he said, 'O boy, hand me my two sandals.' He handed him his sandals, and he went, blazing with anger, until he came to her and said, 'Have you seen what God did to the enemy of God?' She said, 'I see that you have ruined his worldly life, and he has ruined your afterlife. As for what you reproach him with—Dhat al-Nitaqayn (the one with two girdles)—yes, I had two girdles: a girdle with which the food of the Messenger of God ﷺ was covered from ants, and my other girdle which women cannot do without. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say, "In Thaqif there will be a destroyer and a liar." As for the liar, we have seen him; and as for the destroyer, you are he.' He said, 'Then he left.'
