✧ The Commander of the Faithful instructed me during his illness that if anything from the people of the Hijaz alarmed me, I should send you to them. And indeed something has alarmed me. So he said, 'I am as the Commander of the Faithful thought. Bind a banner for me and prepare the armies.' He said, 'He reached Madinah and permitted it for three days. Then he summoned them to pledge allegiance to Yazid on condition that they be slaves, owned property, in obedience to God and in disobedience to Him.' They answered him to that except one man from Quraysh whose mother was an umm walad (a slave woman who bore her master's child). He said to him, 'Pledge allegiance to Yazid on condition that you are a slave in obedience to God and in disobedience to Him.' He said, 'No, rather in obedience to God.' He refused to accept that from him and killed him. His mother swore an oath: if God gives her power over Muslim, alive or dead, she will burn him with fire. He said, 'When Muslim b. ʿUqbah left Madinah, his illness worsened and he died. The mother of the Qurayshi man went out with slaves of hers to Muslim's grave and ordered that it be dug up from the side of his head. When they reached him, there was a serpent coiled around his neck, gripping the tip of his nose and sucking it.' He said, 'The people recoiled from him and said, "O our mistress, turn back, for God has sufficed you against his evil." And they told her the news. She said, "No, not until I fulfill for God what I promised Him." Then she said, "Dig for me from the side of his legs." So they dug, and there was the serpent with its tail wrapped around his legs. He said, 'She withdrew and prayed two rakʿahs, then said, "O God, if You know that I was angry at Muslim b. ʿUqbah today only for Your sake, then leave me and him." Then she took hold of a stick and went to the serpent's tail and moved it, and it slipped away from the back of his head and came out of the grave. Then she ordered that he be taken out of the grave and burned with fire.'
