حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْأَسْفَاطِيُّ قَالَ ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْمِنْقَرِيُّ قَالَ ثنا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي يَعْقُوبَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ
بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ جَيْشًا «وَاسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ زَيْدَ بْنَ حَارِثَةَ فَإِنْ قُتِلَ أَوِ اسْتُشْهِدَ فَأَمِيرُكُمْ جَعْفَرُ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَإِنْ قُتِلَ أَوِ اسْتُشْهِدَ فَأَمِيرُكُمْ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ» فَانْطَلَقُوا فَلَقُوا الْعَدُوَّ فَأَخَذَ الرَّايَةَ زَيْدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ فَقَاتَلَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ الرَّايَةَ جَعْفَرٌ فَقَاتَلَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ الرَّايَةَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ فَقَاتَلَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ أَوِ اسْتُشْهِدَ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ الرَّايَةَ سَيْفٌ مِنْ سُيُوفِ اللهِ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ فَفَتَحَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ فأتى خبرهم إلى النبي ﷺ فخرج فرقي المنبر فحمد الله وأثنى عليه ثم قال «أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ إِخْوَانَكُمْ لَقَوُا الْعَدُوَّ فَأَخَذَ الرَّايَةَ زَيْدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ فَقَاتَلَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ أَوِ اسْتُشْهِدَ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ الرَّايَةَ جَعْفَرٌ فَقَاتَلَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ أَوِ اسْتُشْهِدَ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ الرَّايَةَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ فَقَاتَلَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ أَوِ اسْتُشْهِدَ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ الرَّايَةَ سَيْفٌ مِنْ سُيُوفِ اللهِ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ فَفَتَحَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ» ثُمَّ أَمْهَلَ آلَ جَعْفَرٍ ثَلَاثًا أَنْ يَأْتِيَهُمْ ثُمَّ أَتَاهُمْ فَقَالَ «لَا تَبْكُوا عَلَيْهِ بَعْدَ الْيَوْمِ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «ادْعُوا لِي بَنِي أَخِي» فَجِيءَ بِنَا كَأَنَّا أَفْرُخٌ فَقَالَ «ادْعُوا لِيَ الْحَلَّاقَ» فَأَمَرَهُ فَحَلَقَ رُءُوسَنَا ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَمَّا مُحَمَّدٌ فَشَبِيهُ عَمِّنَا أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَأَمَّا عَوْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ فَشَبِيهُ خَلْقِي وَخُلُقِي» ثُمَّ أَخَذَ بِيَدِي فَشَالَهَا فَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ اخْلُفْ جَعْفَرًا فِي أَهْلِهِ وَبَارِكْ لِعَبْدِ اللهِ فِي صَفْقَةِ يَمِينِهِ» قَالَهَا ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ قَالَ فَجَاءَتْ أُمُّنَا فَذَكَرَتْ يُتْمَنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «الْعُيلَْةَ تَخَافِينَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَأَنَا وَلِيُّهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ؟»

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent an army and appointed Zayd b. Harithah as their commander. He said: "If he is killed or martyred, your commander is Jaʿfar b. Abi Talib. If he is killed or martyred, your commander is ʿAbd Allah b. Rawahah." They set off and met the enemy. Zayd b. Harithah took the banner and fought until he was killed. Then Jaʿfar took the banner and fought until he was killed. Then ʿAbd Allah b. Rawahah took the banner and fought until he was killed or martyred. Then a sword among the swords of God, Khalid b. al-Walid, took the banner, and God granted victory through him. Their news came to the Prophet ﷺ. He went out and ascended the pulpit, praised God and extolled Him, then said: "To proceed: your brothers met the enemy. Zayd b. Harithah took the banner and fought until he was killed or martyred. Then Jaʿfar took the banner and fought until he was killed or martyred. Then ʿAbd Allah b. Rawahah took the banner and fought until he was killed or martyred. Then a sword among the swords of God, Khalid b. al-Walid, took the banner, and God granted victory through him." Then he gave the family of Jaʿfar three days before coming to them. Then he came to them and said: "Do not weep for him after today." Then he said: "Summon for me the sons of my brother." We were brought as if we were chicks. He said: "Summon for me the barber." He ordered him, and he shaved our heads. Then he said: "As for Muhammad, he resembles our uncle Abu Talib. As for ʿAwn and ʿAbd Allah, they resemble me in my appearance and character." Then he took my hand and raised it, saying: "O God, be a successor to Jaʿfar in his family, and bless ʿAbd Allah in the transaction of his right hand." He said this three times. Then our mother came and mentioned our orphanhood. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Do you fear poverty for them while I am their guardian in this world and the Hereafter?"
