حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا عَفَّانُ ثنا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ عَنْ ثَابِتِ بْنِ وَدِيعَةَ

أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي فَزَارَةَ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بِضِبَابٍ قَدِ احْتَرَشَهَا فَجَعَلَ يُقَلِّبُ ضَبًّا مِنْهَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَقَالَ «أُمَّةٌ مُسِخَتْ» وَأَكْبَرُ عِلْمِي أَنَّهُ قَالَ «مَا أَدْرِي مَا فَعَلَتْ وَمَا أَدْرِي لَعَلَّ هَذَا مِنْهَا»

Translation

✧ A man from Banu Fazarah brought the Prophet ﷺ some lizards he had hunted. He began turning one of them over in front of him, and the Prophet said: "A nation that was transformed." And the best of my knowledge is that he said: "I do not know what happened to it, and I do not know—perhaps this is one of them."
