✧ A group of Jews came to the Prophet of God ﷺ one day and said, “O Abu al-Qasim, tell us about matters we will ask you that none knows but a prophet.” He said, “Ask me whatever you wish, but grant me the covenant of God and what Jacob took upon his children: if I tell you something and you recognize it, you will follow me.” They said, “That is yours.” They said, “Four matters we ask you about: tell us which food Israel forbade upon himself before the Torah was sent down; tell us how the fluid of the woman is from the fluid of the man, and how the female and the male come from it; tell us how this unlettered prophet is among his people; and who is his guardian among the angels?” He said, “Upon you is the covenant of God: if I tell you, you will follow me.” So they gave him whatever covenant and pact he wished. He said, “I adjure you by the One who sent down the Torah to Moses: do you know that Israel fell severely ill and his sickness lasted long, and he vowed that if God healed him, he would forbid the most beloved drink to him and the most beloved food to him, and the most beloved food to him was camel meat and the most beloved drink to him was its milk?” They said, “O God, yes.” He said, “O God, bear witness against them.” He said, “I adjure you by God, besides whom there is no god: do you know that the fluid of the man is thick and the fluid of the woman is yellow and thin, and whichever of the two prevails, the child and resemblance are by God’s permission; if the man’s fluid prevails, it is male by God’s permission, and if the woman’s fluid prevails, it is female by God’s permission?” They said, “O God, yes.” He said, “O God, bear witness against them.” He said, “I adjure you by the One who sent down the Torah to Moses: do you know that this unlettered prophet’s two eyes sleep but his heart does not sleep?” They said, “O God, yes.” He said, “O God, bear witness against them.” They said, “Now then, tell us who your guardian among the angels is, for at this point we will either join you or part from you.” He said, “My guardian is Gabriel ﷺ, and God ﷻ has never sent any prophet except that he was his guardian.” They said, “At this point we part from you. Had your guardian been other than him among the angels, we would have followed you and believed you.” He said, “What prevents you from believing him?” They said, “He is our enemy.” At that, God ﷻ said: {Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel—for it is he who brought it down upon your heart by God’s permission, confirming what was before it and as guidance and good tidings to the believers. Whoever is an enemy to God} up to {behind their backs as if they do not know}. Thus they incurred wrath upon wrath.
