✧ Al-Qaʿnabi narrated to us: ʿAbd al-ʿAziz b. Muhammad narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Majid b. Suhayl, from Yahya b. ʿAbbad, from Saʿid b. Jubayr, that Ibn ʿAbbas narrated to him that his father ʿAbbas b. ʿAbd al-Muttalib sent him on an errand of his to the Messenger of God ﷺ. Maymuna bt. al-Harith was the maternal aunt of Ibn ʿAbbas, so he entered upon her and found the Messenger of God ﷺ in the mosque. Ibn ʿAbbas said: I lay down in her room and resolved to count how many (rakʿas) the Messenger of God ﷺ would pray. He said: He came while I was lying down in the room after part of the night had passed and said: “Has the boy gone to sleep?” Then he took hold of a covering that was on Maymuna, threw part of it over himself, with part of it remaining on her. Then he stood and prayed two rakʿas at a time until he had prayed eight rakʿas. Then he performed witr with five, without sitting between them. Then he sat and praised God as He deserves, praising Him at length. Then the last of his words was: “O God, place for me a light in my heart, and place for me a light in my hearing, and place for me a light in my sight, and place for me a light on my right and a light on my left, and place for me a light before me and a light behind me, and increase me in light, and increase me in light, and increase me in light.”
