حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْجَارُودِ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ثنا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ ظَبْيَانَ الْمَازِنِيُّ ثنا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْوَرَّاقُ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَطَاءِ بْنِ مُقَدَّمٍ ثنا حَبِيبُ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرَةَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ
بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ سَرِيَّةً فِيهَا الْمِقْدَادُ بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ فَلَمَّا أَتَوُا الْقَوْمَ وَجَدُوهُمْ قَدْ تَفَرَّقُوا وَبَقِيَ رَجُلٌ لَهُ مَالٌ كَثِيرٌ لَمْ يَبْرَحْ فَقَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ فَأَهْوَى إِلَيْهِ الْمِقْدَادُ فَقَتَلَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ قَتَلْتَ رَجُلًا قَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَاللهِ لَيُذْكَرَنَّ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَلَمَّا قَدِمُوا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ رَجُلًا شَهِدَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ فَقَتَلَهُ الْمِقْدَادُ فَقَالَ ادْعُوا لِي الْمِقْدَادَ فَقَالَ يَا مِقْدَادُ قَتَلْتَ رَجُلًا قَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ فَكَيْفَ لَكَ بِلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ؟ قَالَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَتَبَيَّنُوا وَلَا تَقُولُوا لِمَنْ أَلْقَى إِلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامَ لَسْتَ مُؤْمِنًا تَبْتَغُونَ عَرَضَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا فَعِنْدَ اللهِ مَغَانِمُ كَثِيرَةٌ كَذَلِكَ كُنْتُمْ مِنْ قَبْلُ فَمَنَّ اللهُ عَلَيْكُمْ} فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «كَانَ رَجُلًا مُؤْمِنًا يُخْفِي إِيمَانَهُ مَعَ قَوْمٍ كُفَّارٍ فَقَتَلْتَهُ وَكَذَلِكَ كُنْتَ أَنْتَ تُخْفِي إِيمَانَكَ بِمَكَّةَ»

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ dispatched a military expedition that included al-Miqdad b. al-Aswad. When they reached the people, they found that they had dispersed, but one man with a great deal of wealth remained and did not leave. He said: “I bear witness that there is no god but God.” Al-Miqdad, however, leaned toward him and killed him. A man among his companions said to him: “You killed a man who said ‘there is no god but God’? By God, this will surely be mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ.” When they came to the Prophet ﷺ, they said: “O Messenger of God, a man bore witness that there is no god but God, but al-Miqdad killed him.” He said: “Summon al-Miqdad for me.” Then he said: “O Miqdad, did you kill a man who said ‘there is no god but God’? What will you do with ‘there is no god but God’?” He said: Then God revealed: “O you who believe, when you go forth in the way of God, investigate, and do not say to one who offers you peace, ‘You are not a believer,’ seeking the goods of the life of this world; for with God are abundant gains. Thus you were before, and God conferred favor upon you.” Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “He was a believing man who concealed his faith among a disbelieving people, and you killed him. Likewise, you yourself used to conceal your faith in Makkah.”
