✧ His father said to him: "O my son, ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for a garment from his clothes to shroud me in, and ask him to pray over me." Abdullah said: "O Messenger of Allah, you know the honor of Abdullah, and he has commanded me to ask you for a garment to shroud him in and for you to pray over him." So he gave him a garment from his clothes and intended to pray over him. Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, you know Abdullah and his hypocrisy. Will you pray over him when Allah has forbidden you to pray over him?" He said: "And where?" He said: "{If you seek forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will never forgive them.}" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Then I will increase beyond seventy." Then Allah, glorified be He, revealed: {And do not pray over any one of them who has died, ever, nor stand at his grave} and Allah revealed: {It is all the same for them whether you seek forgiveness for them or do not seek forgiveness for them; Allah will never forgive them.} He said: A man entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and prolonged his sitting. The Prophet ﷺ went out three times so that the man would follow him, but he did not. Then Umar ؓ entered and saw the man, and he recognized the displeasure in the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at his staying. He said: "Perhaps you have annoyed the Prophet ﷺ." The man understood and stood up. The Prophet ﷺ said: "I stood up three times so that you would follow me, but you did not." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, if only you would appoint a doorkeeper, for your wives are not like other women, and it is purer for their hearts." Then Allah, glorified be He, revealed: {O you who believe, do not enter the houses of the Prophet unless permission is given to you} to the end of the verse. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for Umar and informed him of that. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted Abu Bakr and Umar about the captives. Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah, spare your people and take ransom from them, and use it to strengthen yourselves." Umar b. al-Khattab said: "Kill them." He said: "If you two were in agreement, I would not disobey you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ followed the advice of Abu Bakr. Then Allah, glorified be He, revealed: {It is not for a prophet to have captives until he has made slaughter in the land. You desire the goods of this world, but Allah desires the Hereafter.} He said: Then it was revealed: {And certainly We created man from an extract of clay} to the end of the verses. Umar said: "Blessed be Allah, the best of creators." Then it was revealed: {So blessed be Allah, the best of creators.}
