حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ ثنا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ عَنْ أَشْعَثَ بْنِ سَوَّارٍ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ قَالَ
بَيْنَمَا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ نَائِمٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَرِدَاؤُهُ تَحْتَ رَأْسِهِ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَسَلَّ رِدَاءَهُ فَأَخَذَهُ فَأَتَى بِهِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لِيُقْطَعْ فَقَالَ مَا كُنْتُ أَرَى أَنَّ رِدَائِي يُقْطَعُ فِيهِ يَدُ مُسْلِمٍ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «فَهَلَّا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي بِهِ»

✧ While Ṣafwān b. Umayyah was sleeping in the mosque with his cloak under his head, a man came and pulled out his cloak and took it. He was brought to the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ ordered that his hand be cut. He said: "I did not think that my cloak would cause the hand of a Muslim to be cut because of it." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Why not before you brought him to me?"
