حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُمَرَ حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْحَوْضِيُّ ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ثنا مُجَالِدٌ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ لَقِيَ مَسْرُوقٌ الْأَشْتَرَ فَقَالَ مَسْرُوقٌ للأَشْتَرِ «قَتَلْتُمْ عُثْمَانَ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ
«أَمَا وَاللهِ لَقَدْ قَتَلْتُمُوهُ صَوَّامًا قَوَّامًا» قَالَ فَانْطَلَقَ الْأَشْتَرُ فَأَخْبَرَ عَمَّارًا ؓ فَأَتَى عَمَّارٌ مَسْرُوقًا فَقَالَ وَاللهِ لَيُجْلَدَنَّ عَمَّارٌ وَلَيُسَيِّرَنَّ أَبَا ذَرٍّ وَلَيَحْمِيَنَّ الْحِمَى وَتَقُولُ قَتَلْتُمُوهُ صَوَّامًا قَوَّامًا فَقَالَ لَهُ مَسْرُوقٌ «فَوَاللهِ مَا فَعَلْتُمْ وَاحِدًا مِنْ ثِنْتَيْنِ مَا عَاقَبْتُمْ بِمِثْلِ مَا عُوقِبْتُمْ بِهِ وَمَا صَبَرْتُمْ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لِلصَّابِرِينَ» قَالَ فَكَأَنَّمَا ألْقَمَهُ حَجَرًا قَالَ وَقَالَ الشَّعْبِيُّ «وَمَا وَلَدَتْ هَمْدَانِيَّةٌ مِثْلَ مَسْرُوقٍ»

✧ "By Allah, you have killed him while he was one who fasted much and prayed much." Al-Ashtar went and informed Ammar ؓ, so Ammar came to Masruq and said: By Allah, Ammar will be flogged, Abu Dharr will be exiled, and the protected pasture will be guarded, and you say, 'You have killed him while he was one who fasted much and prayed much.' Masruq said to him: "By Allah, you have not done one of two things: you have not been punished as you have been punished, nor have you been patient, and patience is better for the patient." It was as if he had thrust a stone into his mouth. He said: And al-Shabi said: "No woman of Hamdan has given birth to one like Masruq."
